For many people Goa is their first taste of India: warm sea, palm-fringed beaches, seafood and Portuguese-era churches. But after a few days on a sunlounger a thought often creeps in: "Since I am here anyway, what about the Taj Mahal?" It can be done — without giving up the beach. Below we compare three short trips from Goa: to the ruins of Hampi, to Delhi and Agra, and to Jaipur, Agra and Delhi. We are honest about how long each takes, how you travel and what the price depends on.
From Goa, in 2–3 days, you can see the Taj Mahal (a flight to Delhi and a drive to Agra), Jaipur, the Taj Mahal and Delhi (a flight to Jaipur, back by air from Delhi), or the ruins of Hampi, the former capital of the Vijayanagara Empire and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1986 (by car, no flights). The Taj Mahal is the country's most famous monument; Hampi is the closest and the least crowded. Each trip needs dates agreed in advance, because it depends on domestic flights or hotel nights.
Before you head further afield, it is worth knowing there is sightseeing in Goa itself. Old Goa, the former capital of the Portuguese colony, is a group of churches and convents on the UNESCO list since 1986, including the Basilica of Bom Jesus, where St Francis Xavier is entombed. It is a good half-day without a long journey.
Goa is not "India in miniature", though. The great Mughal monuments, the forts of Rajasthan and the old royal cities are far away: Delhi is around 2.5 hours by air, Hampi more than 300 km by road. So a trip from Goa always means at least one night away from your hotel.
| Trip | Days | Getting there | What you see | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hampi from Goa | 3 days / 2 nights | private car with driver | ruins of the Vijayanagara Empire, the Stone Chariot, Virupaksha Temple | history and photography lovers, no flights |
| Delhi and Agra from Goa | 2 days / 1 night or 3 days / 2 nights | flights Goa–Delhi–Goa + car | the Taj Mahal at sunrise, Agra Fort, Old Delhi, Humayun's Tomb, Qutub Minar | anyone for whom "India = the Taj Mahal" |
| India in a Nutshell | 3 days | flight to Jaipur, car, flight from Delhi to Goa | Jaipur with Amber Fort, Fatehpur Sikri, the Taj Mahal, Delhi | seeing as much as possible in a short time |
Programme and scope as in the current offers. The order of sightseeing may change because of traffic and flight schedules.
In the 14th–16th centuries Hampi was the capital of the Vijayanagara Empire. After the defeat at Talikota in 1565 the city was sacked and abandoned; today the ruins of temples, palaces and bazaars lie among granite boulders and hills along the Tungabhadra River. It is a landscape you will not find anywhere else in India.
On the Hampi from Goa programme: on day one, the drive from Goa followed by Virupaksha Temple, Hampi Bazaar and a viewpoint over the river; on day two, the Vittala complex with the Stone Chariot, the Royal Centre, Lotus Mahal, the Elephant Stables and sunset from Hemakuta or Matanga Hill; on day three, the drive back to Goa. A licensed English-speaking guide shows you around on site. The ride in a round coracle boat depends on the water level.
To be honest: the drive each way takes most of a day. If long journeys by car do not suit you, choose one of the trips with flights.
The simplest way to see the Taj Mahal during a stay in Goa. In the recommended 3-day version you fly to Delhi on day one and see Old and New Delhi — Jama Masjid, Chandni Chowk by rickshaw, the Red Fort from outside, India Gate; on day two Humayun's Tomb and Qutub Minar, then the Yamuna Expressway to Agra; on day three the Taj Mahal at sunrise, Agra Fort and an evening flight back to Goa. The 2-day version fits the highlights into a shorter format, with a night in Agra. How to visit the Taj Mahal itself and what tickets cost is covered in Taj Mahal — how to visit.
The three corners of the Golden Triangle in three days. Day one: a flight to Jaipur and the Pink City — the City Palace, Jantar Mantar, Hawa Mahal, Amber Fort, Jal Mahal and a block-printing workshop. Day two: Fatehpur Sikri on the way, the Taj Mahal and Agra Fort, then an evening drive to Delhi. Day three: the Red Fort, Jama Masjid, Qutub Minar, Humayun's Tomb, the Lotus Temple, India Gate and the flight back to Goa. Intense, but it is the most India in the shortest time. More on these places: the Golden Triangle: what to see.
Spending the winter in Goa? We will fit Delhi and Agra from Goa around the dates of your stay — with domestic flights, a private car and the Taj Mahal at sunrise.
Send me the programme
The Goa season runs roughly from November to March; from June to September the monsoon arrives and the beach shacks close. The same winter season suits the side trips: Hampi is best visited from October to February, because from March to June the heat goes above 35°C. In the north, in Delhi and Agra, December and January days are warm but mornings are cold, and fog can delay a flight — bring a jacket for the Taj Mahal at dawn. More in India in December and winter.
All three trips are priced individually, because the price depends on:
The price includes hotel nights with breakfast, a private car with driver, transfers, guides as per the programme, and on the trips with flights, domestic flights too. It does not include entrance tickets, meals other than breakfast, tips or personal expenses. To be honest: we do not quote a "from" price, because on a 2–3 day trip the difference between dates is often too large for such a figure to mean much.
Ideally before you fly. Once you know your holiday dates, it is easier to choose the days for the trip (avoiding a Friday in Agra), book domestic flights at a good fare and secure hotels. It can also be arranged from Goa, but in peak season there are fewer free rooms and good flights.
How it works: leave your details or call, we agree the dates and hotel standard, and we prepare an offer matched to your stay. There is no online payment. The trips are organised and operated by the Indian agency Abyss Tours; Lotus Tours & Travel coordinates them and is your point of contact. If you are on a package holiday, tell your rep or the front desk that you will be away for 1–2 nights — it avoids misunderstandings about your room, meals and return transfer. Also check that your travel insurance covers travel outside Goa and domestic flights.
Yes. The simplest way is a flight to Delhi and a drive to Agra — in a 2-day version with a night in Agra or a 3-day version with an extra day in Delhi. You see the Taj Mahal at sunrise and fly back to Goa in the evening. Remember that the Taj Mahal is closed on Fridays.
Three days with two nights. The drive each way takes most of a day, so days one and three are largely travel, and the whole of day two is for the ruins. Hampi is explored with a licensed English-speaking guide.
No. Unless your nationality is exempt, you need an Indian visa for your stay in Goa, and the same visa covers travel anywhere in the country. Both Goa airports, Dabolim and Mopa, accept e-Visa holders.
Yes. The trip is independent of your holiday: a driver collects you from your hotel and brings you back. Tell your rep or the front desk you will be away for 1–2 nights, and check that your insurance covers travel outside Goa and domestic flights.
It is priced individually, because the cost depends on the dates, the number of travellers and the hotel standard (3★–5★). It includes hotel nights with breakfast, a private car, transfers, guides as per the programme and, for the trips north, domestic flights. Entrance tickets, meals other than breakfast and tips are paid separately.
During the Goa season, roughly November to March. Hampi is best from October to February, as it gets very hot later. In Delhi and Agra, December and January mornings are cold and fog can delay flights.
Delhi and Agra from Goa in 2 or 3 days: domestic flights, a private car with driver and the Taj Mahal at sunrise. We will match the dates to your stay.
